A Book Club is always a good way to bond with those people who share your love of books, but occasionally the group needs a little prompting on discussion topics to get the conversation flowing. Please find below a few ideas to get things started.
- What were you expecting from the book to start with? Did the book meet your expectations? If not, what was different?
- The book starts with Frida leaving her child at home – how did you feel about her as a mother then? Did that change over the book?
- What were your thoughts about the ‘robot children’ and the way they were used to measure parenting?
- How do you feel about the relationship between Frida, Gust and Susanna? How did that change throughout the book?
- What did you feel while you were reading this book? When? Why?
- Which of the standards set down by the school were reasonable in your eyes? Which were not?
- Would you re-read this book? Why? When?
- What were your feelings on the difference between the mothers school and the fathers school? Why were those differences important?
- Frida is the only chinese american in the school – how does this impact her? How is race discussed in the book?
- How do you feel about Emmanuelle being packed away ready for the next mother?
- How do you think this would translate into a film?
- Would you recommend this to any friends? Who? Why?
