Mrs England Book Club Questions

A Book Club is always a good way to bond with those people who share your love of books, but occasionally the group needs a little prompting on discussion topics to get the conversation flowing. Please find below a few ideas to get things started.

  1. What were you expecting from the book to start with? Did the book meet your expectations? If not, what was different?
  2. What were your first impressions of the England family?
  3. Are Mr and Mrs England good parents?
  4. What is different about Ruby’s relationship with the three England children?
  5. How does the situation with the England family remind Ruby of her own past?
  6. How do you feel about Ruby and her sisters differing views about their father?
  7. What is the significance of Ruby’s past in how she responds to the changing situation in the England family? Are her experiences a strength or a weakness?
  8. What do you think of Ruby’s relationships (or lack of) with the other adult characters in the book?
  9. Who was your favourite character, and why?
  10. How do you think the story would have unfolded if you had been in Ruby’s shoes?
  11. Was there any point where you guessed how the end of the book would play out? When was it? Do you think Ruby could have known earlier?
  12. Were you satisfied with the ending of the book? Can you think of a way you would have preferred it to unfold?
  13. What do you think the future holds in store for Ruby?
  14. Have you read any other Stacey Halls books? How does this one compare?
